Faster Bittorrent downloads on StreamyX

I’ve got tonnes of people complaining about slow Bittorrent download speed on my blog almost everyday. Most of them tried port forwarding and complain that my tips do not work. They did work before but probably not now. TMNET started traffic/bandwidth shaping Bittorrent connections of their users.

First of all, please understand what port forwarding is all about. When you’re behind a firewall or router, you computer’s ports will not be visible to the Internet. Port forwarding will allow anyone from the Internet to connect to your computer’s ports. You may place yourself in the DMZ to achieve this but it’s not advisable due to security reasons.

Now we move on to the subject of traffic shaping. This is done on your ISP side, namely StreamyX. They had decided to limit your Bittorrent download speed simply because you leechers are sucking up all their bandwidth with your non stop downloads 24 hours a day.

Another thing you should understand is the architecture of Bittorrent. Do not assume that if you have subscribed for a 1mb connection you should get that speed when downloading. Your download speed may vary due to your seeder’s and peer’s connection speed. There are still a lot of factors that may affect the speed but I’m not going to explain them here.

With your ISP traffic shaping torrent connections, how do you go around their filter?

They detect torrent connections by reading its header packets. If they can’t determine that it’s a torrent connection, it won’t be filtered. The way to go around their filter is to encrypt your packets.

BitComet Preferences

You can do this by using a client which supports protocol encryption. I would recommend you use BitComet for this. Under Preferences - Advanced - Connection, change the option of Protocol Encryption to “Always”.

This will ensure that your header packets are always encryption and your ISP will not be able to tell that it’s torrent traffic. Please take note that I do not provide any support in case you can’t increase your speed.

tq. for info. But I guess the speed is same lah. u can’t download from peers aboard. But local peers yes. So we just depend solely on local peers.

Why only local peers eh? Been sufferring from the same problem also. Any idea how to overcome this? Protocol encryption doesn’t work on this one.

    seems worked…thanks

not work anymore.. tmnet far smart than anyone, they limit any connection using announce url to contact bittorrent tracker not by traffic shaping…

If you try port forwarding manually and software, encrypt protocol, tunneling, open 1000 connection per task and 1000 half open TCP connection all of the same time you might get what you want or not. it’s doesn’t hurt to try thou. Tm.net not smart as it seem. merely the most stupid ISP provider to advertise their product is fraud and every consumer is the victim. Why in the world you gave people 1mb per line if you cannot gave what people wanted. It seems that TM only had 1gb of bandwidth but making sales triple what they have. Do the calculation..they really hope that 1 customer use only 1/4(or less is better) of their bandwidth. I Really hope some Korean ISP coming and compete with TM. note: Korean ISP- the lowest is 30mb per line and no blockade, No wander the korean are more develope. Stupid byrocrack.

I’ve doing this for some time now. Really see the difference. In Penang I’m on PenangFon and there is not need for encryption.
