Port forwarding ZTE ZXDSL 831 for better Bittorrent speed

I know a lot of you guys are asking for this article so here it goes. Don’t blame me for anything if it don’t work for you.

The ZTE ZXDSL 831 supplied by TMNet for it’s StreamyX service. It’s a cheap but quite powerful DSL bridge/router. It uses the GlobespanVirata chipset which is also known to be used to products like D-Link. Since this company has merged with Conexant, support files for the chipset has been removed. You might be able to find it somewhere if you look hard enough.

A bit from the Bittorrent FAQ :-

The BitTorrent client will normally use ports 6881 to 6889, so when you are adding the ports to your firewall, make sure you cover the whole block.

If you don’t know the default password, you should check out ZTE ZXDSL 831 default password.

After you login, click on Services tab.
Under NAT Options listbox, choose NAT Rule Entry.
Click Add to add a new rule.

Rule Flavor: RDR
Rule ID: 15
IF NAME: ALL
Protocol: ANY
Local Address From: 192.168.1.x (Your Bittorrent Client IP)
Local Address To: 192.168.1.x (Your Bittorrent Client IP)
Global Address From: 0.0.0.0
Global Address To: 0.0.0.0
Destination Port From: 6881
Destination Port To: 6889

After done all that don’t forget to click on Admin tab and then Commit & Reboot. Make sure to click Commit then Reboot.

This setting should work for other P2P programs. You just need to find out which port they use and then set the required forwarding.

Update: Those of you complaining about slow download speed, please understand the fact that TMNET limiting your torrent connection speed. Read how to defeat their filters.

  2. toxicle on May 12th, 2005

If you’re using StreamyX … you’re not the only one experiencing slow speed. To help you understand … you need to know that the download speed relies on a few factors.

    1. Internet connection speed of the person you’re downloading from.
    2. The connection speed of your ISP’s international gateway.
    3. Your upload ratio is low.
    4. Your machine is behind a router and you did not configure port forwarding.
    5. Tracker restrictions.
    6. Your ISP filtering commonly used P2P ports.

Check out this page. Very detailed.

  5. toxicle on May 23rd, 2005

jo: that is the IP of the computer running Bittorrent. To check the IP, simply go to the computer and type “ipconfig” on the command prompt. It should show you the computer’s IP.

bluecoder: http://www.bittorrent.com/ is the official site.
    I use BitComet http://www.bitcomet.com

Hi bro.. well i red your article yet i get NAT error on azerus.. well another question is that how do i get my bit torrent’s client IP? and what about the LOCAL PORT=0 is that supposed to stay that way? im stil a noob with this stuffs so i was hoping you could help.. thanks a lot

  9. toxicle on June 8th, 2005

Your client IP is the IP of the computer you have Bittorent running on. If you don’t set it, your ports are not forwarded.

    hi,
i’m using ZTE 831 modem and setup it into router and when i’m using BT, the others PC will disconnected from streamyx. How to add NAT coz I can’t find it ?

  13. toxicle on August 22nd, 2005

Daniel: You need to find out which port MSN uses for audio and then do the same port forwarding. I don’t use MSN so I don’t know :)

tracy: Your BT downloads going slow is beyond my control. Please understand that your speed very much depends on your ratio and peers speed. This article is about port forwarding if you didn’t realise.

farhan: Just follow the steps carefully. You may be using a different version if you still can’t find it.

    hi toxicle,

i have subscrided Streamyx 1Mb for home user.
previously, i used the method of manual dial up, and no problem with bittorrent downloading. because of we need to share the internet services, so i set our ZTE ZXDSL831 as a router and dial-up automatically.

the problem occur after i set my ZTE modem as router, when i try to download using bittorent, the speed was extreamly slow, jz only 10++ Kbit/sec, and most of the time doesnt have any response(mean that 0 Kbit/sec). when i open the bit torrent download s/w and checked, i found that it only can find maximum 4 to 6 peers in the same time, sometime 0.

when i noticed this problem, i try to reset back my modem, and dial-up manualy, the downloading speed totally different, it can up 60 to 70 Kbit/sec.

i have try to set my modem by following the guideline provided above, but still face the same problems.

    pls advice, 10x…

  39. streamyx-blue on March 2nd, 2006

    Hi guys,

There is a serious network congestion within Streamyx, especially the international links. The speed has become extremely slow and response time has become extremely high.

I wrote to custcare of TMNET, but no reply so far.
As usual, their attitude never change lah.

No matter how fast your local loop is, the download links and web access are mostly overseas. The current state of overloading international links will continue until those jokers take appropriate actions to increase their bandwidth.

HAHAH THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE UR TORRENT SETTING!! MUAH MUAH FEEL LIKE WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO U. it worked. just give the stupid zxdsl831 a little time to work. for those who like downloading torrent but slow its actually about seeding. the more ppl seeding the file the faster dwld rate u will get.

i give u 4 advice to dwld torrent very fast:-

    1) use the above setting
    2) download torrents ONLY with many seeds
    3) use BITTORNADO ( its simple/stable )
    4) go to http://www.mininova.org/ . the only site i recommend to grab torrent file because there is plenty seeders there. im currently dwlidng torrent with 7 seeder with dwld rate of 30++ and i usually dwld new “bleach” episode at rate of 100++ (16k seeders). if ur downloading a rare anime or something, go straight and dwld them from their fansub site. eg:-
    http://www.wannabefansubs.net/index.php

i usually use bittornado. give u a bit of bittornado setting to go with the setting above.

    bittornado setting:-
1)go to Prefs ( underlined with blue color )
2)set port range to the ones above ( 6880-6991 )
3)upnp port fowarding set to disable

if the top left circle goes green
then ur dwlding go like w000000t

if not then scroll up do the nat thing and try again

hepi hepi joy joy jooooooooy!!! heeeeeeeeeppppppppii!! JOOOYY !! XD

how to uncapped your modem by laymanquo.

uncapping your modem will give you speeds up to 4.5mbps.
yup! 4.5mbps, thats like when ure dl stuff, u see it dls about 500KBps.
    looks nice rite?

    want to know more?

    firstly, need to know this:
    uncapping your modem/connection is ILLEGAL.
    - do it at your own risk!

well, drinking alcohol in public is ILLEGAL.
    smoking marijuana is ILLEGAL.
    betting is ILLEGAL.
    red colar crime is ILLEGAL.
red tape is ILLEGAL (more of a culture actually).

so we r all into this ILLEGALS stuff already, what harm can be made by adding another one? mahahahahahahaha.

now, some loser said that by uncapping, actually, ure using other ppl bandwidths. so other ppl will be affected.
    that is true.

now, the truth is, all streamyx connection is shared.
    - we do not get 1mbps (it says in fine print, best speed only)
    - if we all get 1 mbps speed, then we can download anything we want, withing our 1 mbps range. we dont affect other users cos they’re using their own 1 mbps connection.
    - but because streamyx is shared, thats why when we dl (especially torrents) other ppl, and ourselves are affected.

    back to uncapping.
    now uncapping is not ILLEGAL.
why? because streamyx says we get 1 mbps. but we dont.
so? we are already sharing and affecting other users. so whats the diff if we uncap?

    now for the fun part.
    how to uncap!!

    - to be continued -

what da best port for ares lite?? and how to add that port??..
i have a problem.. when i want to download.. download is so slow.. so.. can u help me.. how to do it??

  49. TorrentLover on April 26th, 2006

Hey guys, listen up! Forget about port forwarding and shit like that. Here’s my advise after doing some months of research on getting my torrents speed up… Now the port forwarding is not effective anymore as those are blacklisted by ISPs and the more you set them the more you slow down your speed and your peers. So.. lets get to business.
First of all TMnet has already installed traffic shaping solution and if you notice your download hits 300kb/s and suddenly drops to 100kb/s for those with 1mb/s package. Now its simple: 1megabit/s=100kbytes/s so you’re capped. So forget about port forwarding as it’s not effective anymore. Here’s what i did to improve my torrent downloads:
    1. Use Azureus, forget the rest! Utorrent is not bad at times too.. BitComet is not as good as before i never had any luck even with 100+ seeders..
    2. Use Azureus dynamic port assignments it’ll assign something like 50000 and above which are rarely monitored by ISPs and even if it were Azureus has built-in traffic encryption. Enable this feature!!!! it’s important to bypass traffic shaping!!
    3. So far i’m getting pretty decent speeds average 40-60kbytes/s and that’s much much better than with bitcomet which gave me nothing at all and the best i could get was 5kb/s!!! guys remember nowadays most of the trackers became private and reject BitComet clients.. for some reason Azureus is acceptable at major trackers… So if you notice that there are 100s of seeders yet you get a lousy speed then it’s because you’re capped or the tracker rejects you… So far this is all i can suggest you guys.

  50. Praful on April 30th, 2006

Sorry, But I cant find where to set the “dynamic port assignments” in Azureus.

    Thanks

  51. Praful on April 30th, 2006

    And one more thing:

“After you login, click on Services tab.
Under NAT Options listbox, choose NAT Rule Entry.
Click Add to add a new rule.”

    ^ I don’t see a services tab…

  52. Daphsta on May 8th, 2006

Does anyone have any idea why is it when I start to use any bit torrent client, I get a lot of time outs and disconnected from the network. Makes my connection a bit iffy. I have been trying to search for solutions and cause to this problem but can’t seem to find out why. It happens when BT tries to make connection to seeders. I am only getting speeds of only 0.5- 1Kb at any given time.

  53. messiahhh on June 3rd, 2006

Torrentlover are you for real ? Or did you get your info from hearsay ? I mean the part about port forwarding being ineffective now ?

And what about that roberto dude, who promised to teach how to uncap. Mmmm…i think if it was as easy as just posting a few instructions on a forum everyone would uncap their modems.

if encounter BT slow speed d/w or unable to establish connection, or when BT running, ur other network users hard to connect internet, please check ur modem PORT FORWARDING [in ZXDSL 831 known as NAT RULE ENTRY].

if not yet forward ur bt port to ur computer which running bt, u must know several thing b4 create a new rule entry for ur modem.

    1. What port ur bt client use to listen? [listen port, such as BitComet use 13480 as default]

    2. Local IP address for ur computer which running bt client

    Rule Flavor: RDR [Must]
    Rule ID: 15 [choose 1 - 20]
IF NAME: ALL [if not sure which connection, choose ALL]
    Protocol: ANY [choose ANY]

Local Address From: [Your Computer Local IP which run BT - First]
Local Address To: [Your Computer Local IP which run BT - Last]

Global Address From: 0.0.0.0 [0.0.0.0 specified all outsider]
Global Address To: 0.0.0.0 [0.0.0.0 specified all outsider]

//If ur bt only use one port, then destination port From, To, and local port use same port//

Destination Port From: [Yout BT listen port number - first]
Destination Port To: [Yout BT listen port number - last]

Local Port: [Yout BT listen port number - primary/first]

** If need help in other type of modem, can kindly send me an email [[email protected]].

  57. toxicle on June 30th, 2006

What TorrentLover said is true. Traffic shaping is in place. Not sure about Azureus though but it could be one of the ways to counter it depending on how they configure the filters.

jhanz: The passwords work only in Malaysia. One question … if the passwords don’t work how did you configure your port forwarding?

    Hi Guys,

I think the firmware has been updated by TM Net to prevent us from fiddling around with the port forwarding. Why else would they have a ‘MY’ extension in the back for this version? Maybe if we had an older firmware copy, we could flash the firmware and have portforwarding? Am not sure whether this would disable the modem though…

llcoolr: you might want to have a look at http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/ZTE/ZXDSL831v4.2/

It’s pretty accurate to the point of setting the NAT which is missing in the Malaysian version (from what I’ve read so far). Default password for the modem is ADSL / expert03.

    Cheers.

What rafik told was correct…you can unlock the NAT link by going to QUICKSETUP>NEXT>BACK>modify and enable NAT

My question is do I need to enable NAT on all PVC names? It is also asking me for PPP username and password. Also, should I obtain IP address automatically or put a WAN IP address. Please help me. I’m using ZXDSL 831V4.1.0a_D09_OV

I don’t think the auto dial up and port forwarding worked for me. Now I wish to change my modem and PC setting back to manual dial up, which I’ve already gotten both configuration all messed up.

Can someone please assist me in steps of how to recover the settings back to manual dial up for both my modem and PC?

    Thanks in advance.
