Can Muslims consume vegetarian pork?

I had vegetarian lunch today.

“Come come … I’ve got vegetarian curry, vegetarian fried fish, vegetarian sweet sour pork, vegetarian roast chicken, vegetarian cuttlefish …. ”

Woah … I’m definately not a fan of artificial vegetarian creations. I mean what the hell are they trying to do? Be it vegetarian beef, chicken, cat, fish, pork or crocodile, it’s made the same damn ingredients. Beans.

My choice was some real vegetables, more real vegetables and tofu.

Then this question popped up in my head.

Can Muslims consume vegetarian pork? (No offense intended. Just a curious question.)

Interesting question indeed…but I don’t care. Vegetarian or not. I still eat it. But it shouldn’t b a problem…I mean…rule wise, if it didn’t come into contact with real pork. It should be fine.

    No harm…no foul.

    Mmmm…real Char Siew. :P

well, if its strictly vegetarian stuff with no wine or anything as flavoring, i say why not?

  9. Mas Ahmad on July 23rd, 2005

Sure can. It’s bean, not pork. But if it is cooked in the same pan used to cook the actual pork, then cannot la.

  10. Suresh Gnasegarah on July 23rd, 2005

Yes, they can it eat. My malay friends and I enjoy going to vegetarian shops to whack a good vegetarian cha siew or two.

But it’s psychologically a challenge at first many say. And I agree. Ever notice how there is absolutely no, or very little, vegetarian beef? :)

    Interesting eh.

    Suresh.

Well ..Mas Ahmad..gave a good answer. It’s halal since it made from beans. Cooking and food preparation of cousre must be Islamic.

They are allowed to eat vegetarian pork, because it’s not real pork. Psychologically, they are eating pork. And it’s bad for their conscience.

But it doesn’t do much physical damage anyway. :)

i must say that vegetarian pork does not taste like real pork at all. it tastes like, uh, carbonated rubber.

  15. toxicle on July 24th, 2005

spoonfork: You damn right. Everything tastes like rubber.

I wuz a vegetarian for 2 years. Vegetarian food made from soya sux, it’s smelly. No offense but it’s true. I prefer the REAL meat :)

Other than being made from bean qualifies the vegetarian pork to be taken by Muslims, it has to adhere to other pre-requisites in not containing other non-halal ingredients such as alcohol etc.

A religious scholar may offer you a better reasoning.

For the un-initiated, the simple explaination is vegetarian pork is HALAL, he he he, such a contradiction in name! :)

Basically, it is halal because it is not actually a real pork. However, how that muslim have in mind when he ate eat that vegetarion fork is the question. Even a mineral water can be haram (can not be consume) if he/she got in mind that mineral water that he/she is about a drink is a beer/whisky/champagne.

So, if he/she think that he/she eat a REAL pork, then it is haram then. If not, then there is no problem.

I hope, it answers the question :)

my friend is muslim and she ate pork by accident and said if she was not muslim she would enjoy the taste of the pork .

Its is halal as it is not made from any form of real meat and as it is approved by the vegetarian society this means it has been prepared in a meat free enviroment and guaranteed to have no meat by products in the ingriedients.

Just check packaging to make sure, the stuff linda McCartney does is definatly halal.

Either way i don’t eat it tho cos it smells fouk when cooking and this is enough to put me off

Ive got a question though, I know muslims can eat vegetarian approved things but how come they can eat fish, like birdseye fish fingers and frozen fish you can cook at home. How do you halal a fish?
