Removing spyware and optimizing your PC with Autoruns

Autoruns
If you think that you have total control of autostart processes with “msconfig”, you are dead wrong. You may do it via regedit if you know all the keys. There are more ways which you don’t even know spyware can attach themselves and make it almost impossible to remove. This is also a great app for optimizing your PC.

Autoruns shows you just that. You’ll be amazed by the number of useless executables launched automatically by default. It has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys.

When paired with Process Explorer, the dynamic duo does wonders. Be sure to understand each process and their dependencies before disabling them or you will end up with a non usable system. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

i still prefer the old-school method of “regedit”

    then drill down to

    /current user/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run

    or

    /local machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run

then the other part would be the Program Files folder/Startup

    i think thats all …

earl-ku: Sorry to break your bubble but you’re only 10% right.

    What about
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd\StartupPrograms

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad
    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute
Not forgetting the pesky IE BHO and URLsearchhooks

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\UrlSearchHooks
