WiFi in KL

WiFi in KL
Ok … for those of you who attended Anthony & Jim’s “War Driving Kuala Lumpur” training during HITBSecConf2005, these little points might be of interest to you.

I wished we had drove and collected more points but we “got stuck” somewhere for quite some time ;)

You will need Google Earth to view this file. Have fun :)

I only use Google Earth to view the points.

For collecting …. I use either Netstumbler or Kismet with my GPS reciever. You can also get points from WiGLE. All the points in KL and Penang are available there. I think 99% of the points in Malaysia are submitted by me. Would be nice if someone else updates the KL part. You just need to convert those points to KML.

nice one…been driving around with netstumbler on a couple of times but with no GPS, so i’m wondering, since it shows you the signal strength, would that mean that triangulating a stronger signal with the gps coordinates gives you the exact (or closer) location of the AP?

plugging the coordinates into google earth would then probably show that the APs are based in buildings rather than on roads. it would be a hassle to drive around buildings looking for better signal quality though, obviously.

blackdogbone: When detecting with a GPS unit, Netstumbler grabs the location (of where you are) when it detects a WiFi signal. These points do not point exactly to the AP. It will however give you an approximate location.

I would love to see a software that does that :)
    Let me know if I’m wrong … I wish I’m wrong :P
